Fading Furigana adds furigana to Japanese words on web pages and helps you save and review them locally.

Install And Enable The Safari Extension

  1. Install the Fading Furigana Safari extension container and open it once.
  2. Open Safari Settings, then Extensions.
  3. Turn on Fading Furigana.
  4. When Safari asks for website access, allow it. The extension needs page access to find Japanese text and add furigana.
  5. Open any Japanese web page. Annotations appear automatically.

Using It

  • Click an annotated word to see its reading and meaning, and to save it.
  • Mark words as Known, Forgot, Ignore, or Pin.
  • Open the Mac app to see Today, your Library, Discover, and Review.
  • Words you save in Safari can appear in the Mac learning app on the same device automatically.
  • Chrome can be used standalone, or paired with the Mac app through the local pairing code in Settings.

Trial And Purchase

  • New users get a one-month trial of local Basic features.
  • Annotation and passive exposure in the browser extension remain free.
  • After the trial, Basic is a one-time purchase for local single-platform learning features: saving new words, review, and the learning library.
  • Your saved words are never deleted when the trial ends or purchase status changes.
  • Use Restore Purchases in Settings if you reinstall or change Macs.

Privacy

Fading Furigana is local-first. No account is required for extension annotation or Basic local learning, and your learning data is stored on your device. You can control page URL retention in Settings.

Troubleshooting

No Annotations

Confirm the extension is enabled in Safari and has access to the current website, then reload the page.

Saved Word Missing

Reopen or refresh the Mac app. Check Storage health in Settings; it should report shared or native storage, not fallback storage.

Reset Local Data

Settings includes storage health and local reset. Resetting clears local learning data on this Mac.

Purchase Restore

Use Restore Purchases in Settings after reinstalling, changing Macs, or if purchase verification was temporarily unavailable.
